Wireless device appears to be configured properly but I cannot ping my router!

I saw that - that's why I mentioned the use of "really suspect sources".  I
still call it irresponsible to recommend removal of software based on that. 
There are plenty of people on this list who dislike Network Manager for
_good_ reasons, who will chime in when that's really the problem.
