You have, by default, a 3 second delay while grub is starting to press 
ESC.  That would bring up the grub menu, from which you can edit or the 
parameters of any of the pre-configured entries.  One of the grub menu 
choices *already* installed by default is Rescue Mode, which is exactly 
what you would have needed for this instance.

Unfortunately, based on original question, most of the posters to the 
list gave you instructions on how to permanently remove or disable the 
graphical login, not repair a broken X cofiguration.
