dhcp revisited...

This is really getting more confusing by the moment...
I put in my live-cd from Ubuntu 6.10 (which I know doesn't use avahi).
I boot the machine, it cannot get a dhcp license for eth0...

I am convinced at this point that Comcast as a service cannot handle network connectivity for Ubuntu at all under DHCP...

It's a shame, since I need an environment that I can connect to from multiple locations...

Just running dhclient isnt enough?

Well, I've tried every combination of disabling and adjusting interfaces, dhclient leases, etc. , that I can google for (and that the community here has suggested), and I haven't gotten anything that works at all...

I never quite understood how avahi worked, or was able to make it
work, so I never use it explicity, although it is there installed and
running
Whenever I get to some place where I need extra configuration , I
either run 'sudo ifconfig ethX 192.168.0.x', or 'sudo dhclient ethx',
and it woks just fine

I'm rebooting the box into a live-cd mode with my 7.04 disc, to see if the networking will just 'work' ... It's odd because in live-cd mode, the sound works fine as well, but as soon as I did the first adept-update after the installation, the sound went away completely and has never come back either.

Booting into the live-cd doesn't work here, either.  Even if I assign an ip address to it, it still doesn't work...

I'm really at a loss to figure this out...

Any help is really appreciated...
