Automatic recover Grub

Somebody I know is assessing ubuntu for his business and so far is quite 
satisfied.
Until today.  He's managed to foul up the boot process after deleting a 
partition and resizing another.  We've managed to rescue the system with 
a lot of manual fiddle about.
Is there an automated way for reconstructing the menu.lst
We tried googling but just got swamped and couldn't really find any thing.
