Reading a DVD-RW (VR mode) from a freestanding DVD recorder?

I formatted a new DVD-RW in "VR Mode" in a relative's living-room
(i.e. connected to a TV, not a computer) DVD-recorder, recorded some
camcorder footage onto it, played it successfully there, finalized it,
then tinkered around with the playlist options but didn't find them
interesting.  I've brought the DVD home: my Ubuntu box won't read it,
and my DVD player won't play it.  (The DVD-recorder's manual says that
finalizing it should make it readable on practically any equipment.)

Does anyone have any suggestions for reading this?

Did tinkering with the playlist "unfinalize" it?

If I take it back to her house and finalize it again, will that help?
