In general I would agree, hence the reference to sounder. However there
are quite a few questions here that say something along the lines of
"it's in debian, or suse, or xyz", so think that Mark's comments
regarding patch & bug collaboration do relate to Ubuntu user technical
support. Certainly more so than subjects relating to MS patents, VM
licenses, etc.
Lack of patch & bug collaboration in Ubuntu specific application
releases are also a constant issue here. Examples:
Ubuntu OpenOffice OOo (U)OOo vs OpenOffice OOo (O)OOo
- Try File|Wizards|Document Converter in (U)OOo Writer
[crashes every time]
- Try to play a WAV sound file in (O)OOo Impress
[doesn't work unless you install JMF - works in (U)OOo]
- Try to open a Microsoft Works file in (O)OOo
[works in (U)OOo as they've modified the import filter]
- Try copy and pasting from an https page containin links in (O)OOo
[crashes everytime - does work in (U)OOo]
- Try using just about wizard in (U)OOo Base
[most don't work at all, but do work in (O)OOo Base
- Try finding address book conversions for:
- Mozilla / Netscape
- Thunderbird
- LDAP address book
in (U)OOo
Note: I'm not trying to pick on (U)OOo, just pointing out some issues
that I am *very* familiar with. OOo is a critical/major application that
already has enough issues/bugs of it's own using (O)OOo, (U)OOo doesn't
need to keep adding more because it is a distro specific release. On the
otherhand, Ubuntu have fixed several problems in (O)OOo which I trust
they are sharing with Sun and OpenOffice.org so that eventually the
issues can be fixed regardless of the OOo version that is being used.
So... perhaps the post could be interpreted as "random chit-chat" by
some, but I think that it is indeed directly related to ""Ubuntu user
technical support".
