Thank you for the suggestions, and I will probably use them when I get back
to that same problem (which I likely will), but for now the problem has
warped somewhat.
I started taking off the 64bit version of ubuntu from my computer and
putting on the 32bit (i386) version before anyone replied so I would see
what that would do. I found out some odd stuff.
In the live CD mode before I installed the 32bit linux I tried to connect to
the internet... it quickly connected and I was on the internet! So I
thought the problem was solved and just installed the rest of this version.
When it was on the hard drive, I tried to connect to the internet. It
didn't work ... just requested network address forever, circly thing going
and going, and never saying "Connection established." I took out the
ethernet cord, and it just kept going! I tried restarting and it still did
the same thing. After a few minutes (literal minutes) of being disconnected
from cord, however, the network manager would stop trying.
So the new question is, can I switch to a 32bit ubuntu and be OK? Never
really thought about that, just assumed it might have more support. I guess
I will switch back and try your suggestions now, even though it does take a
little while...
