PEBKAC.

Perldoc has been around for at least a decade, so that's a little more
than "these days."

The perltidy utility does an excellent job of keeping code clean.
Don't blame Perl the language for poorly written, unreadable Perl
code.  It should be the responsibility of any programmer in any
language to keep their code readable and maintainable.
