Since he gave no information (programming language background, what he
intends to make, whether the students are supposed to program in it,
etc.) I could suggest he look at Scratch...

Haven't really tried it and it looks like he'd have to use VMWare or
Virtualbox to run it in Windows, it does look like an intriguing
language to look at for simple projects.
