Odd OSS/ALSA issues from Edgy->Feisty upgraded system

Hi all,

I run Kubuntu on a HP DV6000t (Intel Centrino Duo).
Edgy ran pretty good on it, but had some issues with sound, screen, etc...
(because of the odd way HP does hardware at times).

Upgrading to Feisty was great. Most of my problems went away. Screen
intensity adjustments stopped making X explode, plugging in my headphones
actually redirected sound to them, and several other niceties (like suspend).

Unfortunately, after a while of running the upgraded feisty box, I notice that
not all is perfect.
* I've had issues with guidance-power-manager crashing. It was broken from
the start, I submitted a bug report, it started working again, but then broke
within a couple days/weeks (I don't recall)

* More importantly, I noticed that OSS was the only available sound option for
my machine. ALSA simply doesn't work. I've verified that Ekiga only shows
up OSS as an option, Amarok only works with Xine/OSS and setting KDE's sound
to use ALSA breaks sound. A fresh install on a different hard drive shows me
that ALSA indeed works on the machine (quite well). How would I go about
repairing the original install? How would I troubleshoot it?

Thank you,
Matt
