Network manager acting up (no WPA) -- SOLVED

Sorry for flooding the mailing list, but as luck would have it, a
co-worker was watching the ubuntu-users mailing list as well and has a
magical solution for this problem:

1) Go to the Administration->Network menu
2) Select the wireless interface and hit "Properties"
3) Uncheck the "enable roaming mode" box
4) RECHECK the "enable roaming mode" box
5) Click Ok
6) Close the Network dialog

Bizarre, but it works (if anyone would care to explain why this
windows-ish solution works, I would appreciate some enlightenment, as
would the co-worker).
