GNOME: disable Look-And-Feel for Java?

Folks;
at the moment I am switching between XFCE 4.4 and GNOME on my desktop,
trying to figure out a strange applet-related error in Firefox. For
what I have seen so far, the problem is at least related to applets
having a GTK Look&Feel applied as soon as running inside FF/GNOME
opposite to running "native" Java Look&Feel while running inside
FF/XFCE. I'm not sure what's the actual problem yet, nevertheless: Is
there any way of configuring GNOME to prevent it from applying the GTK
Look&Feel to Java applets? Or is this a matter of Java configuration?
Ideas, anyone?
TIA and bye,
Kristian
