for the best soft to remote access ANY OS, look at VNC (or it's derivate)
it can remote access other machine screen and mouse and keyb,
from/to linux,windows,os/x (once properly configured)
and is easy to use from any platform

for the graphic, I have a I-865G and if behaves correctly with accel
and GL and fonts, in 1280x1024 with the standard ubuntu drivers (using i915 DRI)
(once setup correctly too (i just removed the 1600x1200 from the xorg.conf file))
Maybe the I-945G is not well supported by the driver... or need additionnal adjustments

for the lockup, my memory chips are bus-400 but my machine runs well only if bios
is set to bus-320 speed of ram, (otherwise it locks, or jams, or slow, or ...)
Maybe you have similar situation...

I hope this helps...
