What happens if you run xev from the terminal and press space?

I get:

KeyPress event, serial 29, synthetic NO, window 0x3400001,
    root 0x3e, subw 0x0, time 4266236520, (447,739), root:(451,761),
    state 0x0, keycode 65 (keysym 0x20, space), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (20) " "
    XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (20) " "
    XFilterEvent returns: False

KeyRelease event, serial 32, synthetic NO, window 0x3400001,
    root 0x3e, subw 0x0, time 4266236596, (447,739), root:(451,761),
    state 0x0, keycode 65 (keysym 0x20, space), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (20) " "

Do you see something similar?
