apt-cacher on a roaming laptop

so in my 'lab' I have apt-cacher setup so that all my boxes hit a local 'proxy'
which is great. except that my laptop is setup for that too, which is fine 99%
of the time, but not so good when I try to install something when I am on the
road. I could flip all my repos around in sources.list, but that seems 'wrong'
- is there a right way to deal with this?
