apt-cacher on a roaming laptop

so in my 'lab' I have apt-cacher setup so that all my boxes hit a local 'proxy' 
which is great.  except that my laptop is setup for that too, which is fine 99% 
of the time, but not so good when I try to install something when I am on the 
road.  I could flip all my repos around in sources.list, but that seems 'wrong' 
- is there a right way to deal with this?
