Ubuntu-desktop defaults

try:

* logout gnome
* ALT+CTRL+F1
* login
$ rm -rf ~/.local/

* ALT+CTRL+F7
* login

If that gives you your desired defaults back, then there is more to delete:
(but caution: that will DELETE all you modifications to the desktop)

$ ls -d1 .gconf*
.gconf/
.gconfd/

$ ls -d1 .gnome*
.gnome/
.gnome2/
.gnome2_private/
.gnomerc

.nautilus/
.mcop/
.mcoprc
.metacity/
