Thanks, this was I did try before posting. However, I then get TWO mount
points; one on wherever I make my mouny by editing fstab, the other in
/media/PARTLABEL
(where PARTLABVEL is vfat partiton label), - and still no icon on the desktop).

The "original" (i.e., present at the time of Ubuntu install) Windows partition
in fstab looks something like:

# /dev/hda1
UUID=52E06909E05FE1B6 /media/hda1 ntfs   defaults,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 1

which leads me to believe it is created by some Ubuntu system
component at the time of boot. (I have a general understanding of
fstab, but this UUID=... reference is something I have not seen
before).
