For vncserver you need ~/.vnc/xstartup,
For starting X from the command line with startx, ~/.xinitrc
For a default session from a display manager, ~/.xsession
Thus in principle you could have a different default WM for each case.
(I have certainly had this work as I used to have KDE as default desktop
and xfce4 for VNC).
