Added Programs Not Showing on Menu

I used the Applications -> Add/Remove to add certain programs which were 
listed.  However, after the download, the programs did not appear on the 
menus.  If I go back to Applications -> Add/Remove and I add the 
programs which I added before, it is only then that it appears on the 
menu.  Does it mean I have to do it for each and every program which I 
downloaded. What did I do wrong?
