Your hint was what I needed.  I got it running but then figured out just how 
little I needed of LVM to install my virtual machines.  :-).  I've discovered 
that the current ubuntu vmware server package from the commercial repository is, 
as they say, broken.  Can't run with xinetd (which is extremely puzzling), can't 
access the server using a remote console from a remote machine which has lots of 
experience with other remote machines, can't even create a virtual machine was 
local copy of the VM Ware server console.

At this rate, I'm about ready to give up on feisty and go back to 6.06.

Damn its been a painful day with no progress except for the nice bit of help you 
gave me on logical volumes.
