No, there are no special settings needed to make this work on Ubuntu.
What you have missed is that you need to set the minimum protection
level for your connection to 0, allowing plain text without TLS.
You probably also need to adjust the advertised SASL auth mechanisms to
include only plain and login, else other clients will have trouble.
