Calling Open Office Writer gurus

I have an oddity in Open Office Writer.

I have set up a paragrpah style - nothing complicated, it is based on
default, with an indent and italicised text. The problem is that it when
I apply it to text, I get everything excepot the italics. If I modify
the style (F11, select the style, right click -> Modify) I can see that
italics is in the style. And there are other sections of text,
previously formatted with this style, that have the italics!

Of course I can manually set the text to italicised, but that defeats
the purpose of having styles.

Any help gratefully appreciated.
