Searching for 'malayalam' in Synaptic gives quite a few results, though
some of them are translations, that is, if you want to do works in a
Malyalam KDE or GNOME. But, the malayalam-ttf thing is automatically
installed. So, you should not have any problem if Firefox has the
rendering support for Malayalam.

Googling for 'kerala linux user group' is giving a lot of results. Why
don't you contact some LUG list in Kerala, I think they can be of more
help there.

I have never installed anything Malayalam exclusively on my box, but, it
is automatically there. I checked by going to the page:
http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/malayalam.html
On this page you will get a link which will take you to a test page, if
Unicode Malayalam is installed on your machine, try it:
http://www.xenotypetech.com/samplepdfs/ML_Sample.html
This page is working correctly, that is opening correctly with the
Firefox on my Ubuntu 7.04 box. Obviously I cannot read it: I don't know
Malayalam. :)
Is Malayalam support there in your version of Ubuntu and Firefox? Check
it.
