Codec question

When I first installed ubuntu edgy I went through a number of steps to
get media files playing correctly. I have now ubgraded to feisty (a
month or two actually) and just recently discovered that several .WMV
files won't play correctly. They used to work.

I found instructions for w32codecs here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=413624

That has instructions for getting w32codecs from Medibuntu. I did not
follow that procedure exactly because Medibuntu is shown as enabled in
synaptics package manager "third party software" even though I don't see
it listed in /etc/apt/sources.list also, an attempt to install
w32codecs returns the following:

$ sudo apt-get install w32codecs
Password:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
w32codecs is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
  libflac++5c2 libgnet2.0-0 ntp-simple ntp xlibmesa-gl-dev
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.

So two questions, (1) is there another version of w32codecs that I
should have?
(2) Is there some reason I should not remove the packages as suggesteb
by "apt-get" above?

Thanks in advance for any and all thoughts.
