Both are somewhat generalized...so you can use any program that talks to
SANE for scanners or the kernel camera drivers for web cams.  gphoto2 is the
command line tool for digital cameras, but if you plug in a supported camera
a window should pop up with a GUI for pulling pics off of it, but this only
actually works on one of my machines though so I use gphoto2 on the other
ond.  I'm on dapper on the problem box, so maybe an upgrade will fix it.

I just bought a Canon LiDE 25 for about 45 bucks.   It is reportedly well
supported by SANE, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll try to remember to
report back here after I get it setup and tested.
