gnome-terminal question

I can't seem to find how to do something very simple in gnome-terminal: run a
command in a new tab of the current gnome-terminal from the command-line.

I would expect something like

   gnome-terminal --tab --current-window -x top

to work, but the option doesn't seem to exist. Also being able to list current
tabs would be useful. Do I have to junk gnome-terminal and revert to screen?

The man page talks about specifying PROFILENAME and PROFILEID without mentioning
any way of determining/printing these values! Completely useless!
