Actually, using a bunch of tricks I don't really understand, the 32-bit 
Linux kernel can use up to 64 GB of memory.  (though individual 
processes will only be able to 'see' 4 GB each).

What you need in Ubuntu is the -server kernel package, which comes with 
is compiled with Highmem64 support.
