Ekiga and video chat with Windows user

I have been using Ekiga for a while, but I seem to have poor quality, 
especially when doing stuff on my laptop.  It's like several processes are 
seriously competing for resources.  I know I work the poor beast, but it's 
not supposed to be quite that bad.  At times IIRC, it's just shrieks at me.
