Wow, this really looks better (more complex, efficient and as portable as) 
than fail2ban. 

Have you considered packaging and releasing it? I guess many people would 
promptly benefit from this script. I will definitely study on how to 
implement it on my servers, when I implement spampd for filtering before 
queueing.
