Thanks for your help.
I went with the ndiswrapper route.

i installed ndiswrapper from the repository.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/Ndiswrapper
for some reason ndisgtk still shows that i don't have any hardware present

but i installed the INF file using command line
loaded the ndiswrapper module
and things seemed to be working for me so far.

I got it to connect to a WPA-PSK protected WIFI network.
