usb flash drives

I use Ubuntu, but here a flash drive is mounted automatically upon
insertion in /media/<volume label> and a Nautilus window is opened. I
suppose this is what happens on Machine 2, since a Konquerer window
opens.

Why it does not happen on Machine 1, I don't know (did you disable
automounting?).
machine 1 is running gentoo with flux..

 I also dunno why on Machine 2 it would let you mount
to /mnt/usb after it is already mounted.

I manually unmounted the /media dev first and manually mounted the device
just to be sure that it wasn't some other symptom...
