T3D will most likely disappoint you - its very difficult to read as a clock.

Pete, go to Synaptic, search for screensaver.

Install:

xscreensaver
xscreensaver-data
xscreensaver-data-extra
xscreensaver-gl
xscreensaver-gl-extra

>From a terminal run:

xscreensaver

  click on 'settings'
   select GLText (clock)
    click on setttings
modify the text to what you want it to be, example:
     Pete's System%n%n%A%n%d %b

Follow the screensaver instructions in:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CorporateUbuntu
to apply permanently.
