kubuntu and mounted device icons on the desktop

Hi,
I'd like to know where and how I can manage the appearing of mounted devices 
on the desktop (kde). I've tried with the configure 
desktop->behaviour->device icons. I've enable the "show devie icons" and 
checked the items in the list, but it working not very well. For example, if 
I mount manually a device, I cannot see the icon on the desktop. Moreover, 
how can I decide which icons must be available on the desktop even if 
unmounted (and then double clicking on them to mount)?
