user permissions problems

What happens if you open a terminal as you, and then do:

echo "some words" > testfile1.txt

in your home directory ?

If there's a text file you don't mind altering (by adding lines to the 
end), you could also try:

echo "some more words" >> filename.txt

With filename.txt changed to whatever the file name is.

This should narrow things down a bit as to whether the problem is with 
permissions or with gedit itself.

Also, what are the ownership and permissions for the directory itself? 
I.e. what do you get if you do:

ls -l /home/jimmywu ?
