user permissions problems

This may seem like a silly q, but where are you using gedit from? from your 
regular account? And you're trying to save to a restricted folder? try 
typinig in a terminal "gksudo gedit" without the quotes and that will start 
it with root privelages. Or if you have nautilus scripts installed. right 
click in a folder or the desktopp, choose scripts, then root-gedit
