desktop effect + nvidia --> blank screen

hi,
   
  i've just installed ubuntu 7.04 on my toshiba satellite M40. the laptop specs are:
   
  System Model Satellite M40
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 13 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1596 Mhz
RAM  1,024.00 MB
Graphic card NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600
Adapter RAM 64.00 MB 
   
  the installation was ok and i was running the newly installed ubuntu fine
  but the problem occurred when i play with desktop effects. i tried to enable it when i didn't have an internet connection; (as root). after that, my screen goes blank and all i can see is a white, then black screen with nothing on it. i can't even restore it to the previous state. 
   
  now every time i log in as root all i get is a white screen. i've tried many options like failsafe login and re-running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but to no prevails. the funny thing is login for other accounts are not affected though.
   
  question: does anyone know how can i restore my previous desktop? (attached is a copy of my xserver file)
