Thanks for the help - I've now got jackd running in realtime low latency 
mode. In case anyone else is following this, I also had to edit the file 
/etc/security/limits.conf and add the following lines at the end of the 
file:

@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - memlock 250000
@audio - nice -10


I can't log in to the wiki at the moment - I was going to add a few 
lines to:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation
explaining how to get realtime sound recording working under feisty. If 
anyone who knows more than I do feels like updating this page, that 
would be good; otherwise I'll do it myself some time soon.
