How to connect to Oracle 8.1.6 server from ubuntu 6.06 / 7.04

Any ideas how I might go about installing it?
or for that matter if it can still be downloaded from the oracle website?

I have downloaded version 9 client and attempted to run the oracle
installer, but I got an error message

./runInstaller: 62: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")

any ideas?
