How to connect to Oracle 8.1.6 server from ubuntu 6.06 / 7.04

Hi there,

We have an oracle server in our organisation, version 8.1.6, on which
our main system runs.

I need to install an oracle client on my ubuntu box (v 6.06 LTS & a
7.04 box for testing). (for reports for our intranet)

What version do I need & are there any guides on installing?

I have tried installing 10.2 express from the oracle oss repo but this
wont allow me to connect to a server version as old as 8.1.6.

Any help would be gratefully received!
