Installing the nvidia driver involve adding some kernel headers....you
need to switch to a non-GUI runlevel...
#init 2 ( for fedora)
#init 1 (I think 4 ubuntu) run `sysv-rc-conf -list | grep xserver`
Then install

Subject: Re: problem with Xorg
when I run the install from runlevel 1, it gives me a warning (it says
something about possible problems with certain daemons being disabled)
and advises me to switch to runlevel 3. When I do that, the GUI starts
back up again.
Is there anyway to just tell the X-server to exit while remaining in
runlevel 3
Thanks,
Jimmy

When I start the install with the sh command, it starts normally, but
then tells me that I have an X server running and I need to exit X
before installing.
So how do I do that?
Thanks,
Jimmy

Have you installed/reinstalled nvidia drivers......note that nvidia got

You might want to give it a try.
Note: you'll have to switch to runlevel 2
#init 2
Then run ...
#sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run

Thanks to all who responded with suggestions.
I really appreciate your help.
@Frank: I did the dpkg-reconfigure, and then I restarted gdm (sudo
/etc/init.d/gdm restart) and now I have my desktop again. Thank you :-)
There still seems to be a problem though:
glxinfo gives me some error messages, and glxgears isn't working either.
When I find away to copy the output of glxinfo over to this computer,
I'll post it.
glxgears gives me something like
Error: Couldn't get RGB, Double Buffered Visual
