You might try running alsamixer and adjusting the levels.
Running alsamixer, I find all the channels unmated.  I also looked at the
mixer settings in KMixer, and they also show all the channels as unmated.
If I bring up Amarok and play a cd, the eq shows that the audio is, in fact
playing, but no sound.  I've checked lspci, and the audio (Intel AC97 is
listed).  I also checked lsmod and have these entries:

And, according to amixer, all volume channels have a positive value (not
muted).
