Sound in Ubuntu

I was able to hear sound on my speakers as well Logitech USB headphones. But
about a month ago, Ubuntu has stopped playing back (including the music at
the start after one logs in). I have tried  using launcher in the panel but
that hasn't helped. Any suggestions appreciated.
