The latest stable of debian is 3.1 .  I'm not sure which version Ubuntu
is based on, but I'm not sure that it's exactly a one-to-one comparison,
either.  Ubuntu is considered a debian _derivative_, not a distribution
built _on_ debian.
I would probably choose 2 if given the choice, though.
