It's not your imagination.  I get it on my Dell 8600 laptop sometimes in
Dapper, too.  Try opening a terminal, and typing the command line
equivalent of what you want to start (i.e.
- /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox/firefox) Don't quote me on that location...
If there's any problem with the application starting up, it will throw
the errors to stdout since the process was started in foreground on the
terminal.
