Why is adding a new Ubuntu PC to an existing LAN such a pain?

Several times in this thread I have posted a link to a bug report [1]
that states that ubiquity and therefore the Desktop Install CD always
assumes DHCP, so here I post it again :)

You are right that the Alternate Install CD gives the option
