When I have screen resolution/xconfig problems I find the following
normally sorts things out .
sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
I use ubuntu-desktop as it will reinstall any base packages
uninstalled with xorg (for kde I guess it is kubuntu-desktop). I do
however find that is is sometimes nessesery to reboot the PC for the
magic to work.
