Why is adding a new Ubuntu PC to an existing LAN such a pain?

>From memory, it's the other way around, at least in the standard
( "alternate" if you prefer) installer. My experience was that it tried
dhcp first, and fell back to asking for static config information when
dhcp failed.
i don't know what the "live CD" Desktop installer does, as I have not used
it yet...
