Flash plugin, I810 graphics, default depth and hibernation

I have a conflict on my Dell Latitude C.400 running edgy. The non-free
flash plugin was causing Firefox to crash. I found in the forums that
setting the default depth to 24 would fix this, which it did, however,
at this depth, the system will not resume from hibernation successfully,
with screen slowly changing colour creeping in from one corner!

So I can either have firefox working and no hibernating or vice versa
and I'd really like both.

Anyone any idea how I might solve this little conundrum?
