Why is adding a new Ubuntu PC to an existing LAN such a pain?

In case you referred to my earlier comment that managing a network
without DHCP is always a pain: if you have more than 2 or so computers
and sometimes have people come over with laptops -- or some similarly
dynamic element -- then it is certainly a pain to have to manage it
manually. Mistakes are bound to happen, IPs used twice, etc.
Especially compared to the zero work and zero error potential that you
have with DHCP
