Not sure why you can't ping the canadian servers.  One of the 'problem'
of the us servers (at least from what I understand) are that they are
the main servers.  Meaning both users and mirrors hit it to update their
packages.  Using one of the mirrors are probably better if you are in
the US (or avoid updating right away when a new update is available).
